If you’ve noticed your wood burning stove or multi-fuel stove giving off a bit of smoke, you’re definitely not alone and in most cases, it’s completely normal.

A smoky stove doesn’t always mean there’s a serious problem with your installation or your chimney. Often, it’s down to a simple cause that can be fixed in minutes. As professional stove installers, we see this all the time and a little know-how can go a long way toward a clear, efficient burn.

Let’s look at the most common reasons your stove might smoke, and what you can do about it.

A Cold Chimney or Flue

When your chimney flue is cold, the air inside it is heavy and dense which can stop smoke from rising properly. Instead, that smoke has nowhere to go but back into the room.

This happens most often when lighting the stove for the first time that day.

Expert tip: Before lighting your fire, warm up the flue. Roll up a piece of newspaper, light it, and hold it near the opening of the flue for a minute or two. Once the draft starts pulling air upwards, you can light your stove normally and the smoke should clear straight away.

Your Firewood Might Be Too Damp

If you’re burning wood that’s damp or ‘unseasoned’ it’ll smoke heavily because of the excess moisture. Wet logs don’t burn efficiently, instead of generating heat the water inside them turns to steam and produces smoke.

What to look for:

– Cracking at the ends of logs (a good sign it’s dry).

– A moisture content below 20%.

Expert tip: Use a moisture meter to check your firewood, and store logs somewhere dry and well-ventilated. Kiln-dried logs are ideal for a clean, efficient burn.

Opening the Stove Door Too Quickly

Its common, you open the stove door to add another log and smoke has poured into the room. That’s because the sudden rush of air disturbs the draft.

Expert tip: Open the stove door slowly and only when needed. Try cracking it open slightly first for a few seconds before opening it fully, this equalises the air pressure and prevents that puff of smoke.

Poor Airflow or Blocked Air Vents

Your stove needs a steady flow of air to burn efficiently. If the air vents or air controls are too restricted (or accidentally blocked), the fire can’t draw properly, leading to incomplete combustion and excess smoke.

Expert tip: Keep your stove’s vents fully open when lighting, then adjust them once the fire’s burning steadily, and regularly clear out any ash that could restrict airflow.

Down Draught or Weather Conditions

Sometimes, the problem isn’t your stove at all – it’s the weather. Wind direction, temperature, and air pressure can all affect how smoke travels up your chimney. On certain days, strong gusts can create a down draught, pushing smoke back into your room.

Expert tip: Installing an anti-downdraught chimney cowl can make a big difference. It helps regulate airflow, even in tricky weather, and keeps rain and debris out too.

When to Call an Expert

A small amount of smoke when lighting your stove is perfectly normal. But if your stove regularly fills the room with smoke or smells strongly of soot, it’s worth having it looked at by a professional.

Our team can inspect your stove installation, check your chimney flue, and make sure your stove is working safely and efficiently. In most cases it’s a quick fix, and your stove will be back to burning cleanly in no time.

Conclusion

A smoking stove isn’t always a sign of trouble; it’s often your stove’s way of telling you something simple needs adjusting.

By using the right fuel, keeping your chimney flue clear, and ensuring good airflow, you’ll enjoy a warmer home, cleaner glass, and a more efficient burn.

If you’re still unsure or want a professional opinion, our experienced stove installers are always happy to help.

When shopping for a Wood Burning Stove, or a Multi Fuel Stove, you will no doubt see the phrases ‘Ecodesign’ or ‘DEFRA Exempt’. But what do either of those mean?

Lets start with the basic analogy first…

Ecodesign is like a “clean air/efficiency standard” that new stoves must meet.

DEFRA Exempt (also called “smoke‐exempt” or “DEFRA approved”) is about whether a stove is legally allowed to burn wood (or other fuels) in a Smoke Control Area.

What is Ecodesign?

Ecodesign is a UK and EU regulation that sets strict standards for all new solid fuel appliances, including wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves. Introduced on 1 January 2022, the Ecodesign directive ensures that any new stove placed on the market meets specific limits for emissions, efficiency, and overall performance.

In simple terms, Ecodesign stoves are designed to burn cleaner and waste less fuel, helping to cut down on harmful pollutants such as particulate matter and smoke. By choosing an Ecodesign-approved stove, you’re not only improving your home’s energy efficiency but also contributing to better air quality and a more sustainable future.

It’s important to note, however, that while Ecodesign-compliant stoves meet the latest environmental and performance standards, this doesn’t automatically mean they can be used to burn wood everywhere. The Ecodesign regulations don’t override local Smoke Control Area laws. For that, you’ll need a DEFRA-Exempt stove (which we’ll cover next).

Sheraton 5

What is a DEFRA Exempt stove?

A DEFRA Exempt stove (sometimes called a DEFRA Approved or Smoke Exempt stove) is one that has been officially tested and approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for use in Smoke Control Areas. These are areas where local regulations restrict the burning of certain fuels to help reduce air pollution.

In these zones, it’s normally illegal to burn wood or other ‘unauthorised’ fuels in a standard stove. However, a DEFRA Exempt appliance has been specially designed and certified to burn wood cleanly enough to meet the legal requirements. That means you can enjoy the warmth and comfort of a real log fire without breaking the law or causing excessive smoke emissions.

To stay compliant, it’s essential to only burn the approved fuels listed for your stove (such as dry, ‘Ready to Burn’ wood) and follow the manufacturer’s usage guidelines.

Stockton 3

Ecodesign vs DEFRA Exempt: what’s the difference?

Although Ecodesign and DEFRA Exempt stoves are often mentioned together, they aren’t the same thing. Understanding the difference can help you choose the right stove for your home.

In basic terms…

Ecodesign = environmental performance and efficiency

DEFRA Exempt = legal permission to burn wood in Smoke Control Areas

While Ecodesign focuses on efficiency and emissions standards for all new stoves, DEFRA Exemption is about where and what you’re legally allowed to burn. Many modern stoves today meet both standards, offering the best of both worlds: high efficiency, low emissions, and full compliance with UK clean air regulations.

Conclusion

The majority of stoves these days are both DEFRA Exempt and Ecodesign, meaning you dont have to worry too much. You’re choosing a clever, future ready stove – one that meets today’s regulations, promotes cleaner air for years, and delivers top performance and style!

No chimney? No problem. Balanced flue fires make it possible to enjoy the warmth and glow of a real flame without the need for a traditional chimney.

For many people, the idea of a cosy fire at home comes with one big catch: a chimney! BUT that is no longer the case. If your home doesn’t have a chimney, you CAN still enjoy the warmth and glow of a real flame with something called a Balanced Flue Fire!

Let’s break down what that actually means, why it works so well, and whether it could be the right choice for your home.

What is a Balanced Flue Fire?

A Balanced Flue Fire is a Gas Fire with a Sealed Glass Front. Unlike traditional fires, it doesn’t use up the air in your room or rely on a chimney to release fumes. Instead, it uses a clever Twin Pipe System.

The inner pipe pushes out the waste gases.

The outer pipe pulls in fresh air from outside to keep the fire burning.

This means your indoor air stays clean and safe, and the fire still has everything it needs to run properly.

This diagram shows the different ways this pipe can be fitted. This flexibility is what makes balanced flue fires such a good option for homes without chimneys.

It can go straight out through a wall behind the fire.

Out the back, up through the roof like a modern chimney

Up and then at an angle if there’s something in the way.

More in depth details can be found here!

Why Choose One if You Don’t Have a Chimney?

Balanced flue fires are especially useful in modern homes, apartments, or any property without a chimney.

You can still have a fire anywhere with an outside wall
Since the flue can go straight through an external wall, you don’t need to build or convert a chimney. Saving both hassle and money.

They’re more efficient than traditional open fires
Because the fire is sealed behind glass, less heat escapes. That means more of the warmth actually stays in your room rather than disappearing outside.

Safety is built in
The sealed glass front means no fumes or smoke can drift into your living space. All gases are sent outside, keeping your indoor air cleaner and safer.

More freedom in design
Without the need for a bulky chimney, you can be more creative. Balanced flue fires can be built into media walls, modern surrounds, or simple flat walls. The look is sleek, contemporary, and versatile!

Things To Keep In Mind

Of course, there are a few points to know before deciding if a balanced flue fire is right for you…

They only work with glass-fronted fires. If you want an open fire where you can feel the flames directly, this may not be the option for you.

You’ll need a suitable outside wall or roof space where the flue can go.

Installation has to be done by a professional who understands gas safety regulations!

Curious to see what could work in your space? Our team can help you explore the options, show you different styles, and guide you through installation so you can enjoy the warmth of a real fire without the need for a chimney!

Nothing ruins the sleek look of a wood-burning stove faster than rust. One day it’s the proud centrepiece of your living room, the next it’s looking like it’s spent a season at the bottom of the sea. But don’t worry, rust on stoves is common, preventable, and often easy to fix. Here’s what you need to know about why it happens, how to stop it, and how to bring your stove back to life.

What Causes Rust on Wood-Burning Stoves?

Rust is simply what happens when iron, oxygen, and water get together. Since stoves are made from cast iron or steel, they’re naturally prone to it if left unprotected. Here are the main culprits:

Moisture in the Air

Damp rooms (think old cottages, basements, or poorly ventilated homes) are a rust magnet. Even steam from cooking or drying laundry nearby can add to the problem.

Condensation After Use

When a hot stove cools down too quickly, condensation can form inside and out. This is especially common when stoves are used irregularly.

Burning Damp or Unseasoned Wood

Logs with high moisture content release steam, which builds inside the stove and flue. The result? A perfect environment for rust.

Spills and Cleaning Mistakes

Accidentally splashing water, or worse, using water-based cleaning sprays, leaves moisture sitting on the stove’s surface. Harsh cleaners can also strip away protective coatings, exposing bare metal.

Long Periods of Disuse

In summer, when the stove sits unused, warm humid air can settle inside. Over time, this leads to surface rust across the body and firebox.

The Stockton 11

How to Prevent Rust on a Wood-Burning Stove

The good news? Rust prevention is mostly about good habits and a little TLC.

Burn Dry, Seasoned Wood

Logs should contain less than 20% moisture (check with a moisture meter). Kiln-dried wood is best; avoid freshly cut or damp logs.

Keep the Airflow Going

Leave the stove door slightly ajar in the summer or when not in use to prevent damp, stagnant air from settling inside. If your home is humid, consider a dehumidifier.

Protect During Downtime

Apply a thin coat of stove polish or paste to the exterior to add a protective layer. Some stove owners also place moisture absorbers (like silica gel packs) inside the firebox during long breaks.

Avoid Liquids on the Surface

Never use water-based sprays to clean your stove and wipe spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth.

Regular Maintenance

Wipe down the stove every so often with a dry cloth to remove dust and moisture and always ensure the stove is fully dry after cleaning out ash before closing it up.

Chimney Checks

Consider fitting a chimney cowl to stop rainwater dripping down and ensure to book regular chimney inspections to prevent leaks that can cause hidden rust inside.

Start Fires Slowly

Especially after long periods of disuse – start with a couple of small, gentle fires. This drives out moisture gradually and reduces condensation risk.

How to Fix Rust on a Stove

If rust has already appeared, don’t panic! You can often restore your stove with minimal tools a bit of elbow grease.

Light Surface Rust

Use wire wool or a fine sanding pad to gently rub away rust.

Wipe clean, then reapply stove polish or high-temperature paint.

Heavier Rust

Tackle deeper patches with a wire brush or drill attachment.

Treat with a primer if needed before repainting with heat-resistant paint.

Inside the Stove

Empty ash and debris.

Clean with a wire brush and check the firebox for damage.

Re-season with small fires before returning to normal use.

When to Call in the Experts

If rust is widespread, especially on the firebox, flue, or door seals, it’s always best to get a professional involved. What looks cosmetic, can sometimes be structural, and safety should always come first.

Final Thoughts

Rust might look scary, but it doesn’t have to spell the end for your stove. With the right care and attention, your wood-burning stove will stay efficient, stylish, and rust-free for years to come.

When people think of their dream home, certain features come to mind – a beautiful kitchen, spa-like bathrooms, and maybe even a garden oasis. But one design element that’s quickly climbing the list of must-haves is the fireplace.

No longer just a way to keep warm, fireplaces are being celebrated again as focal points that combine function, style, and a deep sense of comfort. From luxurious living rooms to charming bedrooms and even outdoor patios, fireplaces are finding their way into more spaces – and for good reason!

The Enduring Appeal of the Fireplace

There’s something timeless about a fireplace. It draws people in, creates atmosphere, and turns an ordinary room into a warm, welcoming space. Whether you’re watching flames dance on a cold evening or simply enjoying the ambiance, a fireplace transforms the feel of a home in ways that central heating just can’t.

Add some magic to your home

A Statement Piece with Substance

Beyond their obvious warmth, fireplaces are increasingly chosen for their aesthetic value. Modern fireplace designs blend traditional charm with contemporary styling, meaning there’s a fireplace to suit any interior, from sleek, minimal homes to rustic cottages.

Some of the most popular modern fireplace styles include:

Built-in electric fires that offer sleek, linear visuals with minimal fuss

Traditional log burners that create an old-world, earthy atmosphere

Outdoor fireplaces for entertaining in the garden all year round

Fireplaces That Fit Every Space

You don’t need a huge country house to enjoy the benefits of a fireplace. Today’s models are designed with flexibility in mind, whether you live in a period property or a compact city flat.

Electric and flueless gas fires can be installed with minimal disruption, making them ideal for modern homes without chimneys. Meanwhile, compact wood-burning stoves are perfect for snugs, studios, or extensions.

The Emotional and Lifestyle Benefits

Aside from visual appeal and practical heating, fireplaces offer something far more personal – comfort! A roaring fire has been shown to promote relaxation and wellbeing, providing a sense of calm that’s difficult to replicate. It encourages moments of pause, togetherness, and even mindfulness.

Think of all the ways a fireplace adds to daily life:

A quiet evening reading beside the fire

A romantic glass of wine after a long day

A gathering point for family games or conversations

A beautiful backdrop for seasonal decor

Designing Around the Hearth

When planning a room makeover, consider starting with the fireplace. A modern media wall build, a bold traditional surround, or a sleek marble mantel, your fireplace can become the anchor point for furniture, colour schemes, and textures.

Top design tips:

Use complementary tones in the fire surround to match flooring or soft furnishings

Position seating to frame the fireplace, not just the TV

Style your mantel with layered decor for visual interest in every season

More Than a Heat Source

A fireplace isn’t just an appliance – it’s a statement! It’s a source of atmosphere, beauty, and emotional warmth. As homeowners seek more than just functionality from their interiors, fireplaces are re-emerging as one of the most desirable features in any home.

Whether you’re renovating a single room or planning a full home transformation, the addition of a fireplace could be what truly brings it to life.

When you think of a fire in your home, you probably picture a cosy living room, the gentle crackle of burning logs, and a warm glow that instantly makes you feel at home. But beyond their charm and practical warmth, having a fireplace and fire, whether that be solid fuel, gas or electric, has been found to offer real mental health benefits too, helping you relax, unwind, and reconnect with your surroundings!

The Science of Comfort

Recent research has highlighted just how beneficial the presence of a fire can be. Studies have shown that watching a fire can lower blood pressure and promote feelings of calm and wellbeing. There’s something deeply rooted in our connection to fire, it’s no wonder people often describe it as “hypnotic” or “soothing.”

Creating a Ritual of Mindfulness

Lighting and tending to a wood-burning stove is more than a household task, it’s a mindful ritual. Slowing down, focusing on the process, and being present while the fire builds offers a much-needed mental reset in today’s fast-paced world.

This small daily habit helps to reduce stress, calm racing thoughts, and ground us in the moment.

Bringing People Together

There’s something incredibly special about the way a fire draws people in. Whether it’s family chats in the evening, gatherings with friends, or just spending a quiet moment with a loved one – a fireplace creates a natural focal point that encourages connection. whether it be solid fuel, gas or electric.

Year-Round Cosiness

While we often think of fires as a winter essential, many homeowners enjoy the ambience they bring year round, especially in cooler evenings or transitional months. With so many styles available, you can find a fireplace and fire that suits your space and complements your lifestyle.

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your fireplace or installing a new stove, don’t wait until the cold weather sets in. Summer might not feel like the obvious time to think about heating, but it’s actually the best time of year to buy and install a new fire or stove — and here’s why…

Avoid the Autumn-Winter Rush

Come September, we can be booked solid. Waiting until autumn often means long lead times, limited availability, and the risk of not being ready when temperatures drop. By planning and buying in summer, you can schedule your installation at a time that suits you — no stress, no delays!

More Choice, Less Stress

During the off-season, suppliers are typically well-stocked with a wide range of models. Whether you’re after a classic wood-burner, a contemporary gas fire, an eco-friendly stove, or an electric fire that requires no flue! Shopping in summer gives you the first pick before the seasonal rush strips the shelves.

The Perfect Time for Renovations

Planning to give your fireplace area a bit of a makeover? Summer gives you breathing room to decorate, renovate, or even build around your new fire without rushing. You’ll have time to get everything just how you want it, rather than settling for last-minute fixes in the cold.

Easier, Faster Installations

Summer weather is much kinder to installers — dry days and milder conditions mean fewer disruptions, especially when external work like chimney repairs or flue installations are required. That means your project is more likely to stay on track and on time!

Spread the Cost

Investing in a new stove or fire ahead of the heating season means you can manage your budget more easily. Instead of forking out for installation and extra heating bills in one go, you can spread the cost — and avoid any surprises when winter energy costs spike.

Be Winter-Ready

There’s nothing worse than the first cold snap arriving and realising your heating setup isn’t up to scratch. By buying in summer, your fire or stove will be fully installed, tested, and ready to go when you need it most.

Take Advantage of Summer Deals

You might benefit from a better price, a free installation upgrade, or added extras like hearth accessories — just for being ahead of the game! Get in touch today to see what deals we have.

Ready to get cosy the smart way? Avoid the winter rush and get ahead now!
